Hi. I'm David Carlton Dewberry, editor and reviewer of this blog. Welcome to our Gay Dramedy blog, focusing on Thai productions, and occasionally those from other Asian countries.
I used to review live theater, in Louisville, Kentucky USA; you know, the home of alcoholic Bourbon "whisky", and thouroughbred race horses.....THAT Kentucky.... from 2004 to 2019, in this space.
Then, the USA government shutdowns, in the name of a pandemic, closed all the live theaters for two years. I stopped writing at all, for 5 years.
I had reviewed live theater in the print media since my undergrad days at an Indiana University regional location in English and Journalism.
Then, while I was in grad school for marketing, I was Arts and Entertainment Editor for an underground gay Paper, in 7 USA states, called "The Letter" I even delivered this print paper to our three biggest markets in three of those states: Louisville, Kentucky; Indianapolis, Indiana; Lexington, Kentucky; Cincinnatti, Ohio and Bloomington Indiana!
When print papers went out of style, me and Publisher, Ducky Lynch, got together to satirically take the internet by storm, as a hobby blog called The Family Paper.
In 2019, the last review webpublished was "Dracula", at Actors Theatre of Louisville, then, nothing....
I had seen the Thai gay dramedy, or "bl" for the asian equivalent of guys loving guys, of SOTUS. It originally came out around, or about 2017. It starred Krist, and was a real revelation to me about gay dramedy from Thailand.
As I had stage managed the world famous drag show, at The Connection in Louisville, Kentucky, after grad school, and built their sets as well, I was in love with the history of drag, trans and ladyboys in Thailand.
Most Thai gay dramedy has some trans performers, and some men in drag, and the occasional ladyboy in the cast.
In Thailand, there is respect for the King, Ramma the 10th, and his Royal Family, and the official religion of Thailand, which is Buddhism.
In Buddhism, if you look down on another individual, you are looking down on yourself. So, Thailand, in June Pride of 2024, made gay marriage equality legal.
From the days of shows like SOTUS, till today, Thai style gay dramedy has been produced in Japan, Singapore, the Phillipines, Taiwan and South Korea!
There are also co productions between Japan and Thailand.
There are many outlets to stream gay themed dramedies from the Asian world. My personal choice of streaming platform is iQIYI. It is only around $12.00 per month.
The Thai production companies, whose product that I enjoy, includes: Me Mind Y, iQIYI Originals, Star Hunter, GMMTV 24 and many others.
